Everyone is still jumping down YouTube’s throat because it took down the dislike counter for everyone. The company stated that it wants to shield users from being embarrassed by having high dislikes for everyone to see. Also, it wanted to discourage “dislike raids”. This is where a large group of people visits a video just to dislike it and drive down the performance. While those are good reasons, the general population still wants them back.
Now, the like counter is gone for some YouTube users
Now, it seems that YouTube isn’t done just yet. According to Android Police, there are some users who open the app just to see that the like counter is also gone. Several users across Reddit and Twitter posted screenshots showing YouTube videos without the like counter. This must have happened sometime within the last day. One Reddit user (whose post was posted 17 hours ago at the time of this article) stated that “it was visible just a few hours ago.” This is a weird thing to come out of the blue. YouTube didn’t make any sort of announcement about why it’s doing this, so that’s why we’re all confused. It appears that the company is just testing it out on a selection of users to see their reaction. However, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that people don’t like it.
So, what’s the deal?
Right now, we don’t really know what YouTube is planning with this. Now, even at this point, we can’t rule out the possibility of this being a bug. If so, then it wouldn’t really be an issue. But, if it’s not a bug, then there are going to be some really frustrated people. It doesn’t really make sense for the company to just randomly take the like counter down. Seeing the like-to-dislike ratio hasn’t really caused much of an issue for users in the past, so the public doesn’t know why YouTube is bent on hiding that information. Soon, we should get some sort of announcement from YouTube on this matter. Hopefully, it’s a bug that will be squashed soon or just an abandoned change.
