According to noted smartphone leaker Ice Universe, several major smartphone brands will make flagship products with uniform display bezels next year. They specifically mentioned the Xiaomi 13. The Chinese brand was rumored to introduce uniform bezels on the Xiaomi 12 series but not to be. It appears the next-gen models will get this display technology.
Uniform bezels may become a trend in 2023
Of course, uniform bezels aren’t anything new. Google did that on the Pixel 5 back in 2020. All three models of Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series also have equal-width bezels around the display. Some tablets have been doing it too, such as Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S8 and Lenovo’s Tab P12 Pro. But it’s a different game when it comes to tablets. They have bigger screens. This allows OEMs to keep the bezels thick, which makes the task of getting uniform bezels easier. Achieving the same result on smartphones is a bit of a difficult task. Our never-ending quest for more screen space means we have almost squeezed out the bezels, at least on flagship models. As such, there’s an engineering challenge in carrying electronic contacts right up to the edge of the glass screen, which can break easily. Of course, it’s not impossible, as several companies have shown. But there are challenges, and likely added costs too. That’s why most smartphones today have thinner top and side bezels but the bottom bezel, aka the chin, is a little thicker. This is where all the contacts are made. This design makes things a lot easier. Even Google reverted to the “big chin” design for the Pixel 6 series, having introduced uniform bezels on the Pixel 5. However, over the next few months, more smartphone makers may release devices with equal-width bezels around the display. Google may not switch back just yet, with leaks showing a thicker chin on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. But the Nothing Phone (1) will arrive soon with uniform bezels. Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series will most likely keep the uniform design too. Xiaomi will reportedly join the party next year. It remains to be seen who else jumps on the “uniform bezels” bandwagon in 2023.
