As of this writing, the July SMR (Security Maintenance Release) is rolling out to the unlocked variants of the Galaxy Note 20 duo in the US. The new firmware version for the phones is N98xU1UES2FVED. The update is already available on several carrier networks including AT&T, Comcast, Verizon, and Xfinity Mobile. It should soon roll out on other networks too. The carrier-locked variants of the phones should also soon pick up the new security update. As detailed by Samsung earlier today, the July SMR contains fixes for over 60 vulnerabilities. These include three critical Android OS flaws and 41 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items. SVEs are security flaws that only affect the company’s Android-powered devices. Some of the SVEs patched this month were of high severity and affected Samsung’s Knox security platform, App Lock, App Finder, Telephony UI, and more. Overall, it is a pretty important update as it fixes numerous issues affecting your Galaxy smartphone. You might want to install it as soon as you can.
Galaxy Note 20 phones aren’t getting anything else with this update
Apart from these vulnerability fixes, the Galaxy Note 20 series in the US isn’t getting anything more with this update. However, the devices are eligible for Android 13, so the next major feature update isn’t too far off. Samsung is expected to begin public beta testing on its One UI 5.0 custom software based on Android 13 later this month. If everything goes to plan, the stable update may hit the Galaxy Note 20 phones before the end of this year. In the meantime, be ready to install the July SMR on your S Pen-equipped Samsung flagship if you haven’t already. As usual, the update will roll out over the air (OTA) in batches and may take a few days to reach all eligible units. Your phone will notify you once the new software package is available. You can also manually check for updates from the Settings app. Scroll down to the Software update menu and tap on Download and install. If you don’t see any updates, check again a few days later. The latest security update for the carrier-locked Galaxy Note 20 units should also be right around the corner.
