According to noted tipster Ice Universe, the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ will be “only available” in an 8GB RAM option. The source claims the information is “100 percent” accurate (via). That means we aren’t seeing any upgrades in this area. The Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ are also limited to 8GB of RAM. The Galaxy S22 Ultra, meanwhile, comes with a 12GB RAM option as well. In all likelihood, Samsung will do the same with the Galaxy S23 Ultra. But those looking to buy one of the two lesser-specced models won’t have choices when it comes to the RAM amount. While 8GB RAM is still a lot (the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max tops out at 6GB), the scenario is a little different in the Android space. The hardware-software interaction isn’t that deep on Android devices for swift memory management. 8GB can fill up rather quickly if you have multiple apps running in the background, affecting the device’s performance or even killing apps in the background. On top of that, Samsung has several rivals offering twice that RAM amount in lesser-priced phones. So it isn’t surprising to see some fans lamenting this decision.
The Galaxy S23 series could feature faster RAM technology
Samsung may be keeping the RAM amount unchanged on the Galaxy S23 series, but the new phones may still deliver better RAM performance thanks to new technology. The Korean behemoth announced in October that it achieved 8.5 gigabits per second (Gbps) data transfer rates with its latest LPDDR5X DRAM chip. That’s about 1.33 times faster speed than the 6.4Gbps speeds offered by LPDDR5 DRAM chips found in the Galaxy S22 series. The upcoming Samsung flagships are also expected to feature the latest UFS 4.0 storage technology for faster reading and writing of data. So despite things largely remaining the same on paper, the Galaxy S23 series could deliver better overall performance. Stay tuned as leaks and rumors about the devices start to come more frequently.
